COURSE OBJECTIVE:

This course is designed to cover the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum Benchmarks for Algebra IIB, which is a rigorous college-preparatory course.  Students will be preparing for further study in Pre-calculus or Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry.

WORK REQUIRED OF STUDENTS:

All students must come to class on time each day prepared to work with the appropriate materials. Requirements will consist of both in-class and out-of-class assignments.  Students should plan to spend up to 60 minutes daily out-of-class to complete each assignment, and longer periods of study to prepare for tests.  All students will be expected to participate in classroom learning activities.  Students should plan to do homework every day.  If you miss a class, you are responsible for asking Mrs. Allen for missed assignments.  You will have one week to make-up missed assignments and tests.

Algebra IIB is different from previous mathematics courses your son/daughter has studied.   Previous high school mathematics courses reviewed concepts students studied in Algebra I.  Students taking Algebra II will learn new mathematical concepts at a higher level.  For example, the course consists of polynomials, exponential and logarithmic functions, logarithms, sequences and series, rational and radical functions and other advanced mathematical topics.

I have provided a website with additional information to aid them in being successful in the course.  The website contains links to self-check tutorials, study guides, jeopardy games, and practice tests with keys.  I encourage every student to supplement classroom instruction with aids provided on the website.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Pencil, loose leaf paper, graph paper, binder, 7 divider tabs, spiral or composition notebook, 8 dry erase markers, colored pencils, calculator:  scientific calculator, TI83 Plus, TI84, and textbook.   Please note that instruction for any other calculator will NOT be provided.

GRADING POLICY:

The course grade will be weighted as follows:

45% -- unit tests

20% -- cumulative activities or tests

10% -- projects

10% -- homework, daily quiz grades

15% -- final exam

DISCIPLINE POLICY:

I have only one rule in my class.  Act with respect-this includes respect for the teacher, your peers, the school’s property, and yourself.  Any conduct that is not respectful will not be tolerated.  The first offense will result in a warning.  Continued disrespectful actions may result in removal from the immediate setting or detention.  Detention will be assigned on the next available date regardless of the student’s extra-curricular activities.  Please consider this before you choose to disrupt class.  I will contact your parents if you choose to act in a manner that is not respectful on a regular basis. If you continue to act inappropriately or if you miss an assigned detention, a discipline referral will be made which could result in ISS.  Events that could result in detention without further warning are:  not having your book in class, not being silent during the moment of silence, being late to class three times.

COMMUNICATION:

I believe it is extremely important for parents, teachers and students to communicate regularly.  Students should feel free to stay after class or come by after school to discuss difficulties, concerns or get extra assistance.  I want to help, let me know when it is needed.

I have found that the most efficient means for communication with my student’s parents is through email.  I encourage you to email me with your questions, concerns, or comments.  My email address is fallen@walton.k12.ga.us .  Likewise, if you have an email account, I would like to have it so that I can notify you immediately of any news regarding your child.
